Founding Backend Engineer

Remote (U.S. Time Zones Preferred)
Salary: $150K – $200K + Equity

About the Role

An early-stage health technology startup is hiring a Founding Backend Engineer to build the core data platform powering a new generation of preventative healthcare tools.

You’ll design and own systems that ingest and unify complex health data — including wearables, medical records, and diagnostic outputs — into clean, queryable data models that power web, mobile, and AI-driven applications.

This is a high-ownership founding role where you’ll work closely with the founders to build the platform from the ground up in a HIPAA-regulated environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the health data ingestion and processing layer, integrating APIs, medical records, wearable data, and other structured or semi-structured inputs
  • Design and maintain backend APIs and services consumed by web and mobile applications as well as AI-driven systems
  • Continue development of the existing Python backend application, or guide architectural changes if a different approach proves more effective
  • Build reliable and scalable data pipelines and backend services
  • Contribute to infrastructure decisions around deployment, observability, and security when needed
  • Work closely with the founding team to shape product architecture and technical direction

Ideal Background

  • 2–5 years of software engineering experience
  • Strong backend development experience with Python
  • Experience building APIs and backend services
  • Experience working with data pipelines or complex data systems
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-moving early-stage startup environment
  • Strong ownership mindset and ability to ship production systems

Compensation

  • Base salary: $150K – $200K depending on experience
  • Equity: Competitive founding-stage equity
