Director of Finance – Venture-Focused Law Firm

Remote | $120K–$240K base | Up to $300K total compensation

A fast-growing boutique law firm serving venture-backed technology companies and investors is seeking a Director of Finance to build and lead its finance function. The firm currently has approximately 45 attorneys and plans to scale significantly, creating a genuine opportunity for this person to grow into a CFO-level role.

This is a strategic leadership position—not a bookkeeping or accounting-operations role. The Director of Finance will report directly to the firm’s partners and take ownership of budgeting, financial planning, partner profitability, pricing strategy, revenue analysis and investment decisions.

Responsibilities

• Build and own the firm’s annual budget, operating plan and broader financial strategy
• Prepare monthly partner profit calculations and financial presentations
• Advise the partnership on pricing strategy, investments and growth initiatives
• Analyze matter-level revenue, profitability and financial performance
• Oversee expense planning, forecasting and revenue management
• Develop the financial infrastructure needed to support growth from approximately 45 attorneys toward 200+
• Proactively identify financial risks, opportunities and recommended actions
• Serve as a strategic thought partner to the firm’s founding partners

Qualifications

• 10+ years of finance or accounting experience
• Experience within a law firm or another billable-hour professional-services business
• Strong background in budgeting, forecasting and operating-plan development
• Experience with pricing strategy, profitability analysis and investment decisions
• Exposure to partner compensation or partner-profit calculations
• Ability to translate financial information into clear recommendations for senior leadership
• Executive presence and comfort working directly with partners
• Degree in finance, accounting or a related discipline

Preferred Background

• Experience helping a professional-services firm scale from approximately 30–50 professionals to 100+
• Finance leadership experience within a corporate, venture or technology-focused law firm
• Previous experience in a Big Four professional-services or advisory practice
• CPA, MBA or comparable professional credential
• Experience building or modernizing a finance function rather than inheriting a fully established organization

The strongest candidates will be strategic and proactive—someone who can independently determine what the firm should be doing financially and drive those initiatives forward. Candidates whose experience has been limited primarily to bookkeeping, reviewing financial statements or managing outside accountants are unlikely to be a fit.

Compensation and Benefits

• Base salary of $120K–$240K
• Potential total compensation of approximately $150K–$300K, depending on experience and KPI-based bonus
