A rapidly growing, full-service law firm is seeking an experienced Tax Attorney to join its sophisticated Tax and Private Client practice. Depending on experience, the attorney may join at either the Senior Associate or Junior Partner level.
This is a fully remote opportunity for an attorney who enjoys technically challenging tax work and wants the quality of matters typically associated with larger firms without a 2,000+ hour requirement.
The practice handles complex tax planning and structuring matters involving real estate, closely held businesses, trusts and estates, pass-through entities, private investment structures, and sophisticated transactions. The attorney will work directly with senior tax leadership and will have the opportunity to take meaningful ownership of matters and client relationships.
What You'll Do
- Conduct in-depth research and analysis involving complex federal, state, and transactional tax issues.
- Advise on real estate taxation, including Section 1031 exchanges and related tax-deferred structures.
- Handle tax matters involving trusts and estates and pass-through entities.
- Structure transactions to achieve income, gift, estate, GST, and state and local tax objectives.
- Draft formal and informal tax advice, including IRS Circular 230-compliant tax opinions.
- Communicate directly with clients and independently manage sophisticated matters.
- Collaborate with attorneys across complementary corporate, real estate, private client, and other practices.
- Mentor and supervise more junior attorneys and professionals, depending on experience.
- Contribute to articles, presentations, thought leadership, and practice-development initiatives.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of substantive tax-law experience for Senior Associate consideration.
- Generally 7–8+ years of substantive tax-law experience for Junior Partner consideration.
- J.D. and active admission to at least one U.S. state bar.
- New York admission preferred; attorneys admitted elsewhere who are willing and eligible to obtain New York admission will also be considered.
- Significant experience performing sophisticated tax research.
- Experience with a combination of:
- Real estate taxation and Section 1031 exchanges
- Taxation of trusts and estates
- Pass-through entity taxation
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex tax concepts clearly to clients.
- Strong record of client contact and matter/project management.
- Stable professional history and demonstrated career progression.
Particularly Valuable Experience
- Drafting IRS Circular 230-compliant tax opinions.
- Qualified Opportunity Zones.
- Estate, gift, and GST tax planning.
- Fiduciary income taxation.
- Taxation of M&A or other corporate transactions.
- Cross-border taxation.
- Employee benefits or executive compensation taxation.
- CPA designation in addition to a J.D.
- LL.M. in Taxation.
