Tax Department Business Manager

The Tax Department Business Manager will work with the Tax Department co-heads and other Firm leaders to manage the business and operations of the department including, but not limited to, business management, financial management, and attorney recruiting and retention strategies.  The Tax Department Business manager will also work closely with the Talent Management group and other senior managers on various ad hoc projects.

Primary Responsibilities and/or Essential Functions:
  • Assist the Tax Department Heads in managing the department.  Serve as a resource to all tax partners as required.
  • Collaborate with Firm administrative departments, such as finance, legal recruiting, business development, attorney programs, diversity and inclusion, and pro bono to further the business objectives of the tax department.
  • Assist with development of business plans and development strategy.
  • Help develop agenda for Tax Department Partner meetings and following-up on action items.
  • Associate office assignments.
  • Provide assistance in oversight of attorney billable hours and the submission and release of attorney time; inventory management; associate leverage; realization rates and fee arrangement. 
  • Approve, in consultation with Legal Recruiting and Finance, all lateral hires from headcount and business needs perspective.
  • Liaise with Legal Recruiting on behalf of the Department Heads regarding attorney recruiting and the summer associate program.
  • Organize Tax Department annual partner/counsel candidate planning process by collecting information and organizing for presentation for promotion consideration.
  • Any additional responsibilities as required by management (e.g. – Tax Department Retreats).

Knowledge Skills & Ability:
  • 8+ years of relevant “big law” practice experience or equivalent.
  • Previous legal or professional services administration experience a strong plus.
  • Extremely strong organizational skills.
  • Self-initiator who is highly persistent in overseeing projects to successful completion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with various administrative groups and to work closely with lawyers of all levels within a large law firm setting.
  • Strong follow-up skills and the ability to be persuasive in managing priorities
  • Excellent listening skills, strong diplomatic and influencing skills.
  • Proficiency with Excel and comfortable with basic administrative tasks.

JD degree along with a strong familiarity working with tax lawyers in a large law firm environment required.
