About the Opportunity
A fast-growing, technology-forward law firm is seeking a Senior Employment Counsel to advise startups and high-growth companies on employment law, executive compensation and equity plans.
This is an opportunity for an experienced employment attorney who enjoys substantive client work but wants a more modern alternative to traditional law-firm practice. There are no billable-hour requirements or business-development obligations. Performance is measured by quality, efficiency, client satisfaction and contributions to the firm’s legal and operational infrastructure.
The Senior Employment Counsel will independently advise clients while also developing templates, playbooks, precedent libraries and training materials that help scale the practice. The firm is building technology into its legal workflows, so this person should be interested in improving how legal work is delivered and comfortable providing feedback on tools and processes.
Responsibilities
- Advise startups and high-growth companies on federal and multi-state employment compliance.
- Counsel clients on hiring, onboarding, terminations, workplace policies and day-to-day employee relations matters.
- Draft and negotiate employment, executive, founder, confidentiality, intellectual property, restrictive covenant and severance agreements.
- Design and implement equity incentive plans involving stock options, RSUs and restricted stock.
- Prepare ISO and NSO grant agreements, option exercise documents and related board and stockholder approvals.
- Advise clients on executive compensation and equity-plan administration.
- Analyze employee and independent-contractor classification issues.
- Counsel employers on wage-and-hour compliance, remote workforces and state-specific employment requirements.
- Conduct or advise on workplace investigations.
- Develop employee handbooks, HR policies, templates, playbooks and precedent materials.
- Train attorneys and share employment-law expertise across the organization.
- Help identify opportunities to streamline recurring legal work through technology and process improvements.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school.
- Active U.S. bar membership in good standing.
- Approximately 5–8+ years of focused employment-law experience.
- Experience practicing employment law at a leading law firm, employment boutique, high-growth technology company or comparable in-house legal department.
- Hands-on experience designing and administering equity incentive plans.
- Experience drafting stock-option, RSU, restricted-stock and executive-compensation documentation.
- Strong knowledge of federal and multi-state employment laws, including wage-and-hour requirements, restrictive covenants, worker classification and remote-workforce compliance.
- Experience advising startups, emerging companies or other rapidly growing businesses is strongly preferred.
- Ability to independently manage client matters and translate complex legal issues into clear, practical guidance.
- Warm, confident and responsive client-facing communication style.
- Interest in legal technology, AI-enabled workflows, knowledge management and process improvement.
- Willingness to build templates, training materials and scalable legal infrastructure.
