Software Engineer, Compute Infrastructure
Remote — U.S. or Canada
$230-300K base + competitive equity
A fast-growing cloud infrastructure company is hiring a Software Engineer, Compute Infrastructure to help build and evolve the core compute platform used by millions of developers.
This is a highly hands-on infrastructure engineering role focused on large-scale Kubernetes, distributed systems, compute orchestration, and cloud infrastructure. You’ll work across multiple cloud providers, regions, and data centers, building systems that need to be reliable, predictable, secure, and performant at significant scale. render
What You’ll Work On
- Build and operate large-scale Kubernetes and compute infrastructure
- Design systems that span multiple cloud providers, regions, and data centers
- Improve cluster scalability, reliability, performance, and operational flexibility
- Build infrastructure components, controllers, orchestration systems, and automation primarily in Go
- Investigate complex distributed systems and cloud infrastructure issues
- Help execute high-risk infrastructure upgrades and migrations with minimal downtime
- Improve node, pod, container, and workload startup performance
- Participate in an engineering on-call rotation
What We’re Looking For
- 7+ years of software engineering or cloud/compute infrastructure experience
- Deep, hands-on Kubernetes expertise, including cluster operations, scaling, networking, and troubleshooting
- Experience building and operating infrastructure at meaningful scale across multiple clusters
- Strong software engineering background with current hands-on coding experience
- Professional experience with Go; Rust or similar systems programming experience is also relevant
- Experience building infrastructure systems rather than simply consuming or operating existing platforms
- Strong distributed systems fundamentals
- Ability to independently own complex infrastructure projects in an ambiguous environment
The hiring team is specifically looking for engineers who can demonstrate real depth in at least one area of infrastructure and explain the scale, architecture, and personal ownership behind what they built. Pasted text
Particularly Relevant Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is especially valuable:
- Kubernetes control planes, cluster management, or compute orchestration
- Custom Kubernetes controllers, operators, or schedulers
- Large-scale cluster lifecycle management
- MicroVM or workload-isolation technologies such as Firecracker, gVisor, or Kata
- Linux internals or eBPF
- Container runtimes and virtualization
- Cluster networking, CNI, service mesh, or ingress infrastructure
- Bare-metal or hybrid-cloud infrastructure
- High-risk infrastructure upgrades or migrations at scale
The team does not expect one engineer to have every specialty; deep subject-matter expertise in one of these areas can be enough. Pasted text
What This Role Is Not
This is not a traditional DevOps or operations-heavy position. The team is looking for software engineers who build infrastructure systems and write code daily, not engineers primarily focused on CI/CD, cloud configuration, application deployment, or maintaining existing environments. Pasted text
Tech Stack
Kubernetes, Go, Rust, Docker, Linux, eBPF, Firecracker, gVisor, Terraform, Postgres render
Compensation & Location
- Base salary: $230-300K
- Equity: Competitive equity package
- Location: Remote within the U.S. or Canada
- Employment: Full-time render
Why This Opportunity
You’ll join a small infrastructure team where individual engineers have significant ownership and impact. The platform supports millions of developers, and the compute layer is central to the company’s product, making this an opportunity to work on infrastructure problems that are both technically deep and directly customer-facing.
