Staff Data Engineer (Remote)

We are seeking an experienced Staff Data Engineer to lead and contribute to the design, development, and optimization of our data infrastructure. This role requires deep expertise in GCP, data engineering, Change Data Capture (CDC), ETL, governance, and streaming technologies. You will work closely with data scientists, analysts, and software engineers to ensure seamless data ingestion, processing, and access across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architect, design, and implement scalable and reliable data pipelines using GCP services (BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, etc.).
  • Develop and optimize ETL/ELT workflows to support structured and unstructured data processing.
  • Implement Change Data Capture (CDC) solutions to enable real-time data replication and updates.
  • Design and enforce data governance best practices, including security, lineage, metadata management, and access control.
  • Build and manage real-time streaming data pipelines using Datastream, Apache Beam, or other relevant technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs and provide innovative solutions for data integration and accessibility.
  • Optimize data storage and retrieval strategies to improve performance and cost-efficiency.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the evolution of the data engineering team’s best practices

 

Qualifications/Skills:

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on scalable data architectures.
  • Strong expertise in GCP (BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage, IAM, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with CDC technologies like Debezium, Fivetran, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in ETL/ELT tools and frameworks (dbt, Apache Airflow, Dataform, etc.).
  • Deep understanding of data governance principles, including compliance and security best practices.
  • Expertise in real-time data streaming (Kafka, Apache Flink, Apache Beam, etc.).
  • Proficient in SQL and Python for data processing and automation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

While the core competencies are essential, the following qualifications will distinguish exceptional candidates:
  • Tooling Experience: Experience with Terraform or Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) for data infrastructure automation.
  • Pipelines Knowledge: Familiarity with machine learning data pipelines.
  • Environment Exposure: Exposure to multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud environments.
  • Start-Up Experience: We highly value individuals with start-up experience, especially former founders or early engineering hires. This experience indicates a versatile skill set and an ability to thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments.
  • Familiarity with Health Technologies: Experience working with health technologies such as Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch, and CGMs (Continuous Glucose Monitors), with an understanding of the data they generate. Knowledge of PHI (Protected Health Information) and HIPAA compliance, including best practices for handling sensitive health data, is preferred. An interest in or experience with health and wellness technologies suggests a passion for leveraging technology to improve personal and community health outcomes.
